THE STORY
13 years of prohibition in the USA resulted in the transformation of sober Victorian tea carts into swinging bar carts. The great depression arrived a few years later which meant the bar cart was firmly a luxury item. It belonged in exclusive Hollywood circles and with the upper classes (think of The Great Gatsby). By the 1950's people really had something to celebrate with the end of WW2 and the Korean War. The bar cart became a permanent fixture in a whirl of socializing. As glamourous as it seemed it was actually a pragmatic solution to hard economic lessons just learned with the great depression and war period.....drinking at home/office was still cheaper than going out.
In recent years, the drinks trolley has become a household must-have. We salute Mad Men for its return to popularity. For those of us without the space (or budget) for a built-in bar, this four-wheeled wonder is a clever way to display bottles, glassware and barware. To elevate your trolley from the purely practical to the decorative, what you choose to display on it is key. Think retro glassware from Troc.com and a selection of boutique Belgian gins. Cheers!
